Q. No-deal situation with Elsevier, how can I access an article published by these publishers?

Answer

Since 2018, the Swiss Consortium of Libraries (CSAL) has been negotiating with scientific publishing editors with the aim of ensuring optimal access to scientific publications while enabling open publication for Swiss researchers (Read and Publish contracts).

As the year ends, no satisfactory agreement has yet been reached with Elsevier publisher. With the current contract expiring on December 31, 2023, preparations are underway for a contract-free situation at the beginning of next year (see the communication from the University of Lausanne ) and FAQ drafted by CSAL and Swissuniversities.

Access to articles from several electronic journals with these publishers may no longer be possible in the course of 2024. CSAL and Swissuniversities, along with the University of Lausanne, recommend searching for articles in their Open Access versions. This can be facilitated by installing "buttons" in Firefox or Chrome browsers (Unpaywall, Open Access Button, or Core Discovery), searching for available versions on institutional platforms (e.g., Serval, Orphee), or requesting a copy directly from the author.
